What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a sling of muscles at the base of the pelvis that supports the bladder and bowel and is involved in sexual function.
General principles
Exercises usually involve gently tightening the muscles as if stopping the flow of urine or holding back wind, holding briefly, and then fully relaxing. Breathing normally throughout is important.
Avoid over-tension
More is not always better. Some men hold too much tension in the pelvic floor, which can itself cause discomfort. Full relaxation between contractions matters.
When to get an assessment
If you have pelvic pain, urinary symptoms or are unsure about technique, a pelvic health physiotherapist can provide an individual assessment.
